Countering disinformation starts with a method, not with an opinion. In a digital environment where information travels faster than our ability to check it, disinformation is no longer only a public communication problem. It is a real vulnerability for citizens, organisations, institutions and communities.
False news, images taken out of context, manipulative headlines, viral clips, coordinated accounts, bots, content generated by artificial intelligence and influence campaigns can shift perceptions, feed social conflict and lead to bad decisions.
What the course is
Countering Disinformation: Critical Thinking and Information Verification is a practical digital education programme, built to help users understand how information manipulation works and how to verify independently the information they meet every day. It is part of the CyberAID ADA project, an educational initiative dedicated to increasing the digital, informational and cognitive resilience of users.
The course does not tell the user what to believe. It offers no lists of good and bad sources, and it imposes no conclusions on sensitive topics. It teaches a method that anyone can apply on their own.
What it teaches
- How manipulation techniques work, from emotional framing to selective context
- How to trace an image, a quote or a claim back to its original source
- How to recognise coordinated behaviour, bot activity and artificially amplified narratives
- How to evaluate content generated by artificial intelligence
- How to build the habit of pausing before sharing
Who it is for
The course is written for people without a technical or media background: teachers, parents, public sector staff, employees in any organisation, and anyone who wants to make informed decisions in a noisy information environment. It is free, like every CyberAID material.
